Yearly Activities and Events Funding has become a crucial issue when it comes to extended activities and programs at our schools. With the resources that are available, Bishop offers a multitude of after and during-school programs. Because Bishop is a school with a large student population, our programs are assessed yearly to fit the needs of all our students. The teachers and the administrators are committed to providing quality programs and we rely on parent and community participation to assist in extra activities throughout the school year. Bishop is a school with a well-balanced curriculum and activities where all students have the opportunity to participate. Bishop has many special programs throughout the year to augment curriculum and to celebrate our school. Kindergarten Orientation and Visitation Incoming Kindergarten students and parents spend time in their new learning environment. Formal Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held in November. Parents will be notified of the conference schedule. Since there will be no other scheduled conferences during the year, parents are strongly encouraged to participate in the formal conferences to discuss with teachers ways in which they can provide assistance at home to improve their child's school performance. If there are questions or concerns about your children during the school year, let us know right away-don't feel you must wait for someone at school to contact you. Back to School Night In the Fall Bishop opens the classrooms in the evening for parents and guardians to visit their student's classroom to receive an overview of curriculum and activities for the year. Each year, volunteers from the Sunnyvale Garden Club, spend every Thursday morning at Bishop where they incorporate hands-on gardening with science and nature curriculum. Bishop benefits greatly from the program and the Bishop gardens are beautifully maintained. Each year in December, students in some classrooms perform for the school and for families in the Holiday Program. The program is a compilation of performances including singing, dance, poetry, and drama, to celebrate the holidays. Multicultural Night is a yearly event in Bishop School's effort to bring the family and community members together for an evening of cultural entertainment, ethnic foods, and fun. It is a great time to bring everyone closer to our school and to highlight our incredible ethnic diversity. In the Spring, students and their families are welcome to attend Open House evening, where parents and guardians get an opportunity to visit their student's classroom. Students practice and present music, singing and acting for Bishop and its families. Reading/Writing Incentive Programs Bishop students participate in fun reading and writing incentive programs. The programs motivate students to read and write and to learn the pleasures of reading and writing. Past programs have included reading rallies where students are encouraged to read every day for pleasure and young authors' faires where students write, illustrate and bind their own stories. Beginning in the 1992-93 school year, children of all grades were invited and encouraged to participate in the designing of the Bishop School tee-shirt, resulting in a new school shirt available for purchase for students, staff, and parents. Occasionally a new design contest is given to create a new tee-shirt. Every Friday is school spirit day to promote spirit and pride at Bishop School -- staff and students may participate, if desired by wearing the Bishop school tee-shirt. Each year students in some classes perform for the school and for families in an outdoor performance of cultural music and dance. Each year, students in the 5th grade have the opportunity to participate in a week-long science camp learning adventure at Walden West Science Camp. Students generally participate in a fundraising activity prior to science camp to help defray the cost of camp. Bishop's major fundraiser for the year is its Walkathon. All students attempt to raise pledges for their participation in the event. Students walk around the field to satisfy pledge donations and physical education. Funds raised from the yearly event help to support field trips, assemblies, student incentives, etc. The Bishop Yearbook is created by students and a committee of staff members to encapsulate events of the school year. The price is to cover the costs of production and is made affordable to students who desire to purchase the yearbook. |
