Academic Support Programs

Bishop School integrates many programs that support the curriculum, including programs for special needs, such as Gifted and Talented, Migrant Education, Special Education, Speech and Language, Resource, Extended Reading, Skills Center, Primary Intervention, Occupational Therapy, Bilingual Education.

Computer Lab

Bishop has a comprehensive Computer Lab with PC computers to accommodate one full class of students. Computer experiences include helping students to feel comfortable using computers, alphabet and number sequencing, reading and math games, structure of language and math activities, and beginning writing activities.

Emphasis in upper grades is expanded to word processing skills with software programs available in areas of logic and problem solving. Newly acquired Cornerstone software is aligned with language and math curriculum and allows students to progress at appropriate learning levels, including computer aided assessment. There are also computers in all classrooms available for student use.

Gifted and Talented Education (G.A.T.E)

High ability students receive extra challenges and extension of learning through differentiated curriculum and individualized assignments in the classroom for grades 4 and 5.

Accelerated Reading Program

The Accelerated Reading Program is available to students in grades 1 through 5 and encourages students to read for meaning and comprehension. Students read from a select group of books and are "evaluated" for comprehension using corresponding computer software. Students are charted using a point value system. The evaluations provide success in reading.

Accelerated Math Program

Much like the Accelerated Reading Program, the Accelerated Math Program for grades I through 5 allows students to work at their pace in reinforced steps. Students complete worksheets for understanding and follow up with an assessment to show advances in math procedures and problem solving.

Reading/Writing Incentive Programs

Bishop students participate in fun reading and writing incentive programs. The programs motivate students to read and write, and to learn the pleasures of reading and writing. Past programs have included reading rallies, young authors fairs, the Governor's Reading Awards Program, and the yearly Sertoma Essay contest. For the past two years, Bishop has received the Governor's Reading monetary award for student excellence in reading.

Student Leadership Team

The Student Leadership Team is a group of dedicated, energetic students voted in by their peers to speak and act for the student body. The Student Leadership Team makes decisions for our school and acts for the entire student body. The Leadership Team leads students in school spirit, and community activities. The Leadership Team is a role model for the school.

Field Trips

Field trips enhance the learning experiences of children and are an important part of our school program. Parents are asked to sign a permission form at the beginning of the school year for all field trips. Parents are informed in advance of field trips, which are away from the school neighborhood. If you do not wish your child to participate in a particular field trip, please send a note to his/her teacher and other arrangements will be made.

Art Classes

Fourth and fifth grade students are provided art instruction from a certificated art teacher.

Music

Students in Kindergarten through 3 rd grade receive quality music instruction, including instrumental, vocal, and music theory.

After School Programs

Bishop School utilizes the talents of the staff and community to allow students the opportunity to participate in many wonderful after school programs such as tutorials, band, orchestra, dance, choir, and a variety of sports activities.

Yearbook

Committees of students  and staff members celebrate events of the year and provide memories for students by creating the Bishop Yearbook.
