Programs For Special Needs

Resource Program

A Resource Specialist and Resource Aide provide instruction to meet the goals and objectives on the IEP (Individual Education Plan) for qualifying children with learning disabilities, to enable them to experience success in the regular classroom.

Student Study Team

The Student Study Team (SST) meets regularly to make recommendations to meet the needs of referred students who require assistance for success. The team includes the parent, principal, psychologist, resource specialist, classroom teacher, and any other support personnel who can contribute to the assessment process.

Language Acquisition Lab

The Language Acquisition Lab services students in a pullout and push-in program to accommodate students needing extra assistance in English. The sheltered English approach is used for most English Learner - EL students.

K.L.A.S. (Kids Learning After School Program)

KLAS offers an after school program for select students who may be "at risk" or low achieving, including a homework/tutorial session and a recreational/art session utilizing community resources. KLAS aims to create a safe, fun and enriching after school environment that introduces new experiences in learning while providing additional support for understanding regular school subjects.

Project H.E.L.P.(Higher Expectations Learning Program)

The Project HELP program provides underachieving students with supplemental instruction in a five-week summer term and a nine-month school year extension. The program provides supplemental reading and math instruction to underachieving students. The element of parent participation is mandatory to assist student progress.

Title I Program

The federally funded program assists students in grades I though 5 who are assessed below the national rankings. Individual grade levels look closely at opportunities to increase success for these students. Grade levels participate in either before- or after- school tutorials or in-class instruction.

Sunshine Program

One paraprofessional or special friend provides one on one play sessions in a non-academic, safe environment, which benefits children who are shy, withdrawn, aggressive, mildly depressed, or "at risk" for school adjustment.

Counseling

Bishop has a trained counselor on board 20 hours weekly for students with adjustment, social, and emotional needs. We also received a grant to have a caseworker available to our students from Social Advocates for Youth.
