San Miguel School Policies

Attendance

Legally Excused:

Students are expected to be present and punctual to class at San Miguel. Students are excused from school for personal illness, medical/dental/court appointments, and for funerals of immediate family members. Any other reason is an unexcused absence. The School District Attendance Review Board is made aware of students who are excessively absent.

Absences:

Telephone the school, (408) 522-8278, the day your child is absent, or send a note (with your child on the day he/she returns) explaining why he/she was not in school. Please avoid absences such as shopping and vacation trips as they impair the learning process for the child. When you know your child will miss school for a reason other than personal illness, medical/dental/court appointment, or funerals of immediate family members, please contact the school office and your child's teacher. Personal illness of 4 days or more requires a note from the Doctor.

Habitual Truant:

A student having 3 unexcused absences, in combination with tardies over 30 minutes, is considered a habitual truant. Ten or more unexcused absences, in combination with tardies over 30 minutes, will result in a Student Attendance Review Board (SARB).

Independent Study:

This program allows the absent student to receive credit for work done outside the classroom and enables the school to receive funding even though the child is away. Please make arrangements prior to the absence, with the teacher and the school office. The teacher must be given 5 days' notice (one week) to prepare assignments. Independent Study is a signed contract between student, parent/guardian, school, and School District, and is limited from 5 to 10 days. Principals may use their discretion to approve or deny the contract. All trips should be scheduled when school is not in session.

Tardiness:

Students who are late to school must report to the office before going to class, for an admit pass. Tardiness is closely monitored since it interrupts instruction time and students' learning. Tardies should not be more than 3 during the school year. Students with tardiness or absence problems will be referred to the School District Attendance Review Board.

Appointments:

Students are allowed to leave the school during school hours for medical, dental or emergency appointments. For your child's protection, no student will be allowed to leave the grounds during the school day without personally being checked out at the school office by his/her parent or those listed as official emergency contacts.

Closed Campus

San Miguel School is a closed campus. Students are required to remain on campus during the entire school day.

Visitors

All visitors to the school (including parents), regardless of their purpose, must sign-in at the office. This is for the protection of our students and help to avoid unnecessary interruptions in the classrooms.

Transfers

Please notify school personnel at least two days in advance of a student's impending transfer. All textbooks, library books, lunch payments, and fines must be cleared before the student secures a transfer to another school.

Animals at School

If an animal follows a child to school, we have no choice other than to call the home and see if a parent can pick the animal up or call the County Animal Control. If a child wishes to bring a pet to "share" in the classroom, prior permission must be given by the teacher. Animals are not allowed on school buses.

Communicable Diseases

A child must not be in school when he or she has:
