Many people received the green star of the complete energy shutdown for this winter break 2010-2011.  Congratulations to everyone who made such a great effort!

A few notes about each school:

San Miguel remains the champion, with Fairwood close behind--great effort!  San Miguel and Fairwood are both smaller than the other schools, so every classroom carries a lot of weight (positive or negative!), percentage-wise.

Vargas had one room left heating, but the rest of the campus was really well shut down.  Special shout-out to the computer lab teacher who had printed out the shutdown list and checked everything off.

Cherry Chase wowed me yet again this time with their two cleared-out staff fridges.  A lovely site to behold.

Columbia had all their manual thermostats set back, which was amazing, because thanks to construction much of the campus has been out of computer controlled heating/cooling for a long time.  Also I did not find any personal mini-fridges running, so that was great.

Sunnyvale Middle remains the personal mini-fridge leader in the district, but at least all but 4 were shut down, thank you! Great effort all around.

Cumberland had a little infestation of electronic baby vampires left plugged in (A/V carts, TVs, VCRs, CD players, etc.) but thank you to the 22 teachers who achieved complete shutdowns!

Ellis gets super kudos for shutting down and cleaning out their two staff fridges!  Fantastic!  Special shout-out to room 24:  way to go getting a complete this time!  And room 25, I knew you had it in you.  Congrats.

Lakewood has quite a few mini fridges but they were ALL shut down, so that was fantastic and I only found 2 computers on in the whole campus!

Bishop stumbled a bit this time out, with a lot of baby vampires (items left plugged in) sucking away at their results.  A big THANK YOU to the 23 teachers who spent the time to shut everything down--you're awesome.

Personal mini-fridge note:  Most of you who have mini-fridges received a paper from me with a calculation showing an estimate of how much energy your fridge uses and what it costs.  This is based on the Amps, which is on the label on the back of the fridge.  (I was SO wishing those labels were inside the fridges like they are in full-size fridges, let me tell you!).  My goal with those was just to further the conversation about the fridges and get folks thinking about what needs they really have and how those can be met.  If you want to estimate your own fridge costs (at school or at home) there is an online version of the fridge calculator you can use that can be accessed from the District's energy conservation web site at http://bit.ly/fridgecalc .  There are 68 personal mini-fridges out there at the moment, so it is worth thinking about how necessary they are.

Thank you to everyone who worked hard to give us a great shutdown!  I hope you had a restful break,

Ursula
