A Letter from the Principal

May 20, 2013

Dear Lakewood Community,

I'm very proud of our students for their perseverance and hard work during our last two weeks of CST testing--thank you for your support at home with consistent bed times and your donations of classroom snacks. Last week was also Teacher Appreciation Week. The generous luncheons that you provided were an amazing show of community and care for our teachers and staff. Wow! We are honored by your efforts and inspired by your trust in us to care for and teach your children.

As we enter these last few weeks of school, we enter a time of celebration, reflection, and most of all, ENERGY! I would like to thank you for your energy and involvement, your communication and support from home this year. I look forward to our time of sharing and celebration at Open House this Wednesday May 22 from 6:30-7:30pm. There will be a variety of activities, including our science fair, book fair, and the PTA silent auction in our staff room.

Looking to next year, if you would like to make a class placement request, it is most important to talk with your child's teacher. Any written requests should be turned in to the office by May 28th. Students' first day of school will be Wednesday, August 21st. Class lists will be posted on Friday, Augst 16th. If your child is on an affidavit of residency, the affidavit will have to be renewed and submitted in August for class placement.

Lakewood is looking for energetic and positive adult role models to help supervise students during lunch starting in the fall. Are you interested in being a noon aide at our school M-F for about an hour each day? Please inquire in our school office before the end of the school year.

It has been my pleasure and honor to work with you and your children this year.

Have a wonderful summer,

Pam Cheng

Health and Wellness: 5-2-1-0

 What is a Sugar-Sweetened Beverage?

Sugar-sweetened beverages include all beverages that contain added caloric sweeteners. Examples include: sodas, fruit drinks and “juices”, sport drinks, energy drinks, flavored milk, sweetened tea and coffee, rice drinks/horchata and sugar cane beverages.

To have a better idea of how much sugar is in a beverage divide the grams of sugar by 4, this will tell how many teaspoons of sugar are in the beverage

Water is fuel for your body:

■ Water is the most important nutrient for active people.

■ Between 70-80% of a child’s body is made up of water.

■ When you exercise, you sweat, and when you sweat you LOSE water and minerals – it is important to replace the water you lose when you sweat

Safe Routes To School

Last week we saw an increase of students walking and riding bikes to school during the Walk and Roll week.
Students who did walk or bike to school earned sunglasses for the summer. As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, remember that walking or rolling not only helps reduce smog and pollution but also provides some of that hour of activity we aim for each day as a part of our 5-2-1-0 healthy living.

Cyber Safety Tips (McAfee presentations 5/16/13)

Lakewood School thanks the 24 McAfee volunteers who came and presented Cyber Safety classes to every class grades K-5 last Friday, May 16. Here are some notes for parents about what students learned.

1.  Stop: before you click on links or free downloads.

2.  Think: if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. Never share personal information.

3.  Connect: when you know it’s safe.
