7th & 8th Grade Woodworking

$20.00 Materials Cost -- to be paid to the teacher by the end of the 2nd week of class - Cash/Checks (payable to Columbia Middle School).

WOODWORKING EMPHASIS:
This class focuses on the planning, designing, and building of various wood projects. Students will learn and demonstrate standard woodworking techniques, proper use of hand tools and power tools, the use of standard shop machines (such as sanders, drill presses, band saws, scroll saws, lathes, and routers), and shop safety. Students will learn about different types of wood, wood selection and uses, milling, wood joints, wood products, finishes, and etc. Several finished projects should be taken home by the student.

7th & 8th Grade Design Engineering

DESIGN ENGINEERING EMPHASIS:
Students will explore basic concepts in design engineering and technology. Students will be introduced to some basic principles which might include small motor mechanics, prototype design, aero-dynamics, flight, rocketry, structural engineering, bridge building, and more. Students will have opportunities to build projects that demonstrate what they've learned-such as CO2 powered racecars, mouse trap cars, weight bearing bridges, H2O rockets, and others. Students will learn the idea of "scale" and practice how to plan, design, and build their scale projects using detailed working drawings, hand tools, power tools, and shop machinery.

6th Grade Basic Woodworking Exploration

$10.00 Materials Cost: -- to be paid to the teacher by the end of the 2nd week of class - Cash/Checks (payable to Columbia Middle School).

BASIC WOODWORKING EMPHASIS:
As part of the 6th Grade Elective Wheel, students will participate for one-quarter class that explores basic woodworking and techniques. This class will focus on measuring and design, properties of wood and wood selection, planning, basic woodworking with hand tools, power tools, and some woodshop machines (such as drill presses, sanders, and scroll saws). Emphasis will be placed on cutting, shaping, sanding and finishing of projects. Shop safety is a must and proper tool use is taught and stressed. Students can expect to bring home their completed projects.

For All Classes

SAFETY IS A MUST!
For safety reasons students must pass all required safety training tests with an 80% score or above before being allowed to use tools or machines. Students who do not pass with an 80% or above score MUST continue to study, retake, and pass the test before he/she will be allowed to use tools or operate particular machinery.

GRADING:
These are project and participation based classes. Students will receive grades that reflect their class participation, good workshop/classroom behavior, work habits, quality of finished and completed projects and assignments, the number of projects that a student completes, personal project self-evaluations, and teacher evaluations. Students are expected to follow all directions, work safely, put effort into their projects, and turn their projects in on time, or they may lose credit.

CLASS EXPECTATIONS
Students WILL...
  • ALWAYS FOLLOW ALL SAFETY RULES AND GUIDELINES.
  • Remember HORSEPLAY OR ROWDY BEHAVIOR IS NEVER ALLOWED! (NO running, pushing, shoving, or any other reckless behavior that could cause a student to be injured.)
  • LISTEN QUIETLY WHEN THE TEACHER IS SPEAKING…STOP YOUR WORK, TURN OFF MACHINES, PUT TOOLS DOWN, AND GIVE YOUR COMPLETE ATTENTION TO THE TEACHER.
  • Arrive to class ON-TIME and be ready to work.
  • Have all materials and projects available to work on during class.
  • Complete projects in a timely manner and by due dates.
  • Bring a PENCIL each day. Pencils ONLY...no pens.
  • Do NOT eat in the Shop.
  • Use all tools properly (in the manner they are taught and intended) and inform the teacher of any problems with equipment, projects, or other students in class.
  • Always practice good behavior and good judgment.
  • Be respectful of all people and projects.
  • Be responsible for their work, their messes, and their actions.
  • Read and follow all directions (spoken and written).
  • ALL students will help with clean-up duties at the end of the period.
  • Follow ALL school rules. All school rules are strictly enforced!
Students who fail to act appropriately, disrupt or disrespect others, refuse to work, fail to follow directions, cause injury to others, or create a potential safety hazard may be asked to sit outside of class for the remainder of the period. Students MUST make up this time for credit or it will affect their grades. The amount time out of class equals time to make up. Students assigned to detention are expected to serve when assigned or the time doubles. Office referrals are given as necessary.
