DESIGN ENGINEERING EMPHASIS: Students will explore basic concepts in design engineering and technology. Students will be introduced to some basic principles which might include small motor mechanics, prototype design, aero-dynamics, flight, rocketry, structural engineering, bridge building, and more. Students will have opportunities to build projects that demonstrate what they've learned-such as CO2 powered racecars, mouse trap cars, weight bearing bridges, H2O rockets, and others. Students will learn the idea of "scale" and practice how to plan, design, and build their scale projects using detailed working drawings, hand tools, power tools, and shop machinery. |

BASIC WOODWORKING EMPHASIS: As part of the 6th Grade Elective Wheel, students will participate for one-quarter class that explores basic woodworking and techniques. This class will focus on measuring and design, properties of wood and wood selection, planning, basic woodworking with hand tools, power tools, and some woodshop machines (such as drill presses, sanders, and scroll saws). Emphasis will be placed on cutting, shaping, sanding and finishing of projects. Shop safety is a must and proper tool use is taught and stressed. SAFETY IS A MUST!
For safety reasons students must pass all required safety training tests with an 80% score or above before being allowed to use tools or machines. Students who do not pass with an 80% or above score MUST continue to study, retake, and pass the test before he/she will be allowed to use tools or operate particular machinery. GRADING: These are project and participation based classes. Students will receive grades that reflect their class participation, good workshop/classroom behavior, work habits, quality of finished and completed projects and assignments, the number of projects that a student completes, personal project self-evaluations, and teacher evaluations. Students are expected to follow all directions, work safely, put effort into their projects, and turn their projects in on time, or they may lose credit. CLASS EXPECTATIONS Students WILL...
