NETS Standard 1:  Use keyboards and other common input and output devices (including adaptive devices when necessary) efficiently and effectively.

Possible Integration Strategies:

a.    Language Arts:  The student will use all steps of the writing process using a writing processor to type a story

b.    Math: The student will use the mouse to solve simple division problems when using educational software such as Mighty Math, Math Workshop, Graph Club, etc.   Computer Operation:  Uses and understands various storage devices and handles them with care.  The Student is able to recognize components such as the hard drive and handles floppy disks and CD-ROMs properly.

c. All curricular as appropriate:  The student practices keyboarding skills with appropriate software or online resources such as:

NETS Standard 2:  Discuss common uses of technology in daily life and the advantages and disadvantages those uses provide.

Possible Integration Strategies:

a.  History Social Science: Discovering our past and our traditions and comparing past to today. The student could make videos of students interviewing their parents, grandparents or school personnel, comparing the past to the present.

b.  Science: Human interaction: Introduce how technology has changed how people live.  The class can discuss how life has changed since television, video games, the Internet gained popularity.

c. All curricular as appropriat: The student selects and uses appropriate technologies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of communication. One way is to explore different interactive resources such as the following site:

NETS Standard 3:  Discuss basic issues elated to responsible use of technology and information and describe personal consequences of inappropriate use.
 
  Possible Integration Strategies:
 
a.  Writing Process: Informative Writing.  The student will write notes, comments, and observations that reflect comprehension of content and experiences from a variety of media.
 
b. Ethical Literacy: The student will be introduced to the fact that copying  work, or copying software is illegal.
 
c.  All curricular as appropriate:  Brainstorm good uses for the computer and what information should not be shared on line.  The teacher may want to summarize tips from the following site to share with students.

NETS Standard 4:  Use general-purpose productivity tools and peripherals to support personal productivity, remediate skill deficits, and facilitate learning throughout the curriculum.
 
Possible Integration Strategies:
 
a.  Computer Operation: The student begins formal keyboarding instruction.  He or she learns the use of basic word processing functions.  The student uses spell check as a tool for proofreading.  He or she learns to insert graphics from various sources. Also an introduction to saving documents to disks or folders as well as retrieving documents from particular sites should be covered.  The student may use a typing program or lab facility to begin formal keyboarding instruction.
 
b.  Math: Selects and uses appropriate instruments and technology, including scales, rulers, thermometers, measuring cups, protractors to measure real-world situations.  The students and teacher may access a variety of web sites to support curriculum integration.

NETS Standard 5:  Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, Web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.

Possible Integration Strategies:

a.  All curricular as appropriate. Introduced as appropriate.  Language Arts:  Write within the (informative) domain. Students can each contribute a page to a class electronic book.

Possible Integration Strategies:

a.  All curricular as appropriate: The student researches and prints information from the Internet using sites or search engines as appropriate under the teacher’s supervision. The teacher can introduce the students to selected web pages as a whole group activity.

NETS Standard 7:  Use telecommunications and online resources (e.g., e-mail, on-line discussions, Web environments) to participate in collaborative problem-solving activities for the purpose of developing solutions or products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.

Possible Integration Strategies:

a.  All curricular as appropriate: The student will be introduced to safety and netiquette issues for using the Internet.  The student may participate in supervised e-mail activities, and communicating with key pals.  They may visit some virtual museums or participate in some interactive projects according to the area of curriculum and/or interest.  Sample projects can be found at

NETS Standard 8:  Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software, laserdiscs, DVD’s) for problem solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.

Possible Integration Strategies:

a.  Reading:  The student will continue to demonstrate an understanding of text by determining main concept and supporting details in print, as well as non-print media messages.

b.  Writing: The student will use periods, question marks, commas in writing activities.  To facilitate this standard they can use a variety of software programs, videos, web sites and other resources to extend learning opportunities.

NETS Standard 9:  Determine when technology is useful and select the appropriate tool(s) and technology resources to address a variety of tasks and problems.

    Possible Integration Strategies:

a.  Social Science/ Comparing the past to today.  The student is introduced to the idea that technology has changed the way people access information.  Also, how such devices as cell phones and garage door openers are expanding how people access electronic devices.

b.  All curricular as appropriate.

NETS Standard 10:  Evaluate the accuracy, relevance, appropriateness, comprehensiveness, and bias of electronic information sources.

Possible Integration Strategies:
 
a. History/Social Science Comparing the past to today.  The student can visit various historical web sites and compare past ways of life to present day living.
 
b.  All curricular appropriate:  The student is introduced to the concept of copyright laws.  The student is introduced to the ethics and legalities of software licensing.
