NETS Standard 1:  Use keyboards and other common input and output devices (including adaptive devices when necessary) efficiently and effectively.

Possible Integration Strategies:

a.  Writing Process: The student can use a word processor in all steps of the writing process in the different domains.

b.  All curricular as appropriate: The student continues formal keyboarding and works toward Computer Literacy.
The student can use “cut,” “copy,” and “paste” functions.
The student can change document view and page orientation.
He or she will learn to insert graphics as an in-line or as a drawing object.
Using a typing tutor program the student will continue formal “home-row” key boarding skills.

NETS Standard 4:  Use general-purpose productivity tools and peripherals to support personal productivity, remediate skill deficits, and facilitate learning throughout the curriculum.

Possible Integration Strategies:

a. Social Studies: The students can use simulations to provide students with practice in decision-making, critical thinking, and problem solving.  Use appropriate software to enhance learning such as Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego, The Oregon Trail, and Math Brain Teasers.

b. Language Arts:  Students write notes, comments, and observations that reflect comprehension of content and experiences from a variety of media.  A few sources of support materials include:

a.  Language Arts: The student uses electronic technology, including word-processing software and electronic encyclopedias, to create, revise, retrieve, and verify information. NETS Standard 8:  Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software, laserdiscs, DVD’s) for problem solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.

Possible Integration Strategies:

All curricular as appropriate: Computer Operation:  The student identifies uses for technology at school and in various occupations.  The student uses appropriate procedures for citing computer resources.  The student respects computer systems and files (not changing file names, system controls, downloading without permission, etc.). He or she takes advantage of programs or websites such as:

The student may view educational videos on the Gold Rush, the Changing Earth, California’s history or other curricular areas.  In the content area of math the student may analyze real-world data to recognize patterns and relationships of the measures of central tendency using tables, charts, histograms, bar graphs, line graphs pictographs, and circle graphs generated by appropriate technology including calculators and computers.

NETS Standard 9:  Determine when technology is useful and select the appropriate tool(s) and technology resources to address a variety of tasks and problems.

    Possible Integration Strategies:

a.  Math The student selects and uses appropriate instruments and technology, including scales, rulers, thermometers, measuring cups, protractors, and gauges to measure in real-world situations.  The student selects and uses appropriate technologies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of communication.

b.  Language Arts:  For any given project choose the most appropriate form of presentation is chosen including the options of creating a  slide show, short stack in HyperStudio, creative story, newspaper, web page, poster, sign, or brochure.

c.  Math:  Measuring:  According to the math unit being presented in class, the student will use the best tool, among electronic and traditional resources, to measure any given object.

d.  All curricular as appropriate.  The student can perform more hands-on activities in developing individual multimedia projects (i.e. slide shows).

NETS Standard 10:  Evaluate the accuracy, relevance, appropriateness, comprehensiveness, and bias of electronic information sources.

    Possible Integration Strategies:

All curricular as appropriate.  Computer Operation functions may include where the student:

  • Identifies uses for technology at school and in various occupations.
  • Shows respect for computer systems and files by not deleting crucial files.
  • Uses appropriate procedures for citing computer resources.
  • Practices critically viewing different web sites while researching author bias. 
  • Cites computer sources correctly and uses relevant information from assorted media.
  • Examines teacher-previewed sites for accuracy and relevance to any given topic.
  • Understands safety and netiquette issues for using the Internet.
  • Continues to be aware of how to stay safe online.
