Since 2012, the Sunnyvale School District, Sunnyvale Rotary Club, and Sunnyvale Community Services and the YMCA have partnered to fight childhood hunger when school is out.
The supergroup established the annual Our Kids Our Community fundraiser, which helps serve thousands of meals each summer.
Sunnyvale School District's Seamless Summer Feeding Program serves approximately 14,800 lunches and 5,500 breakfasts to Sunnyvale school-age children during the summer months. Sunnyvale Community Services Kid's Summer Food Aid distributes an additional 2,500 bags of "kid-friendly" food during the summer months.
Funds raised at the event have helped lead to the expansion of a weekend food distribution program created by Sunnyvale Community Services, Kaiser Permanente, Second Harvest Food Bank, and the Sunnyvale School District, which targets more than 140 low-income families who struggle to afford food when students are home for meals on weekends. Funds have also helped Sunnyvale Community Services provide families in need with shoe gift cards, and backpacks and school supplies to help children in need while they are at school.
