History in the Making (1910s-1940s)

sunnyvale grammar school

1910-1919

  • 1913 - The opening of school was delayed by smallpox

  • 1915 - Sunnyvale Grammar School opens on January 4

  • 1916 - Sunnyvale Parent Teacher Association (PTA) formed

  • 1917 - A new auditorium, which serves the entire community, was built

1920-1929

  • 1920 - Two classroom wings added

  • 1923 - Student population growth called for the hiring of a vice principal and 16 teachers

  • 1923 - Westside Union High School District starts classes at Sunnyvale Grammar site

  • 1925 - The high school moved to its own site

  • 1926 - New “cement building” constructed at Sunnyvale Grammar

  • 1926 - Leased Ford Model T bus for $75/month to transport students

  • 1927 - The District purchased its first bus for $500

  • 1928 - Elected Board of Trustees - 309 votes. 

1930-1939

  • 1932 - Organized first band, made up of 35 children

  • 1933 - Sold school bell to Baptist Church for $5

  • 1938 - Recreational activities started by Mr. Fred Imhof

1940-1949

  • 1944 - Mr. Stanley Ellis becomes the new Superintendent, replacing Jim Moon

  • 1946 - Five more classrooms added

  • 1948 - Construction on Bishop (Sunnyvale Avenue) School begins

  • 1949 - Encina/Sunnyvale Grammar School closed

  • 1949 - A total of 54 teachers and 1,792 students
