Balanced Literacy Instruction

Our district is committed to delivering a balanced approach to literacy instruction that equips all students with the skills they need to become proficient readers and writers. This approach integrates a variety of key components to support students' literacy development, including:

  • Phonemic Awareness – Recognizing and manipulating sounds in spoken words

  • Phonics – Understanding the relationships between sounds and letters

  • Word Recognition – Building fluency in identifying words quickly and accurately

  • Reading Fluency – Developing the ability to read text smoothly and with expression

  • Vocabulary Development – Expanding knowledge and understanding of words

  • Reading Comprehension – Strengthening the ability to understand and engage with texts

  • Writing – Cultivating skills in expressing ideas clearly and effectively through writing

By balancing explicit, structured instruction with opportunities for independent reading and writing, we create an environment where students can master foundational skills while also engaging meaningfully with diverse texts. Our focus on differentiation and evidence-based practices ensures we meet the unique needs of every learner.

Science of Reading

"The science of reading is a vast, interdisciplinary body of scientifically-based* research about reading and issues related to reading and writing. This research has been conducted over the last five decades across the world, and it is derived from thousands of studies conducted in multiple languages. The science of reading has culminated in a preponderance of evidence to inform how proficient reading and writing develop; why some have difficulty; and how we can most effectively assess and teach and, therefore, improve student outcomes through prevention of and intervention for reading difficulties." (The Reading League [TRL], 2022)
