  • Welcome to Kindergarten! I am so pleased to be your child's teacher this year!

     

    Teacher Mission Statement:

    It is my mission to cultivate an environment that fosters a love of learning and creativity. A classroom where mistakes mean that learning is taking place. Each child is an individual with different emotional, social and academic needs that are taken into consideration. Each child has genius and is a leader. Together we are a team—the child, the family and the teacher(me)!

     Homework!

    Academic homework in kindergarten should be no longer than 15 minutes. During that 15-minute window, please choose two or more of the following to help reinforce learning happening in the classroom:

    • Have your child read to you from a reading selection at his/her reading level. As we progress in our learning, your child will bring home reading mini-books that we have learned and read in class. Keep these at home in a special place accessible to your child. These mini-books are a reliable source of successful reading for your child because s/he will already be familiar with them and will have learned to read the letters and sight words used in the text. You may also choose to have your child read other reading material that is appropriate and at your child's reading level (see me for this information). You may also check out books from our classroom library.
    • As a family, read together and enjoy the read-aloud book brought home each week in the homework bag. (These will be rotated every week.) 
    • Spend 5-10 minutes practicing the alphabet flashcards. (See Resources page)
    • Spend 5-10 minutes practicing the sight-words flash cards. (See Resources page)
    • Spend 5-10 minutes practicing the number flashcards. (See Resources page)
    • Count objects at home. (Counting one-to-one: one number stated for one objects touched. Begin with at least 10 objects and increase as needed.)

    Research shows us that large amounts of paper and pencil homework do not help improve student learning. Instead, it is found that what is most beneficial to child development and learning has nothing to do with this traditional type of homework.

    What is extremely important for a young child's development is to:

    • talk
    • sing
    • play board or card games
    • play outside
    • play creatively (dress-up, put on plays, make a fort...)
    • enjoy music and dance
    • draw, paint, create artistic works
    • climb, run, jump
    • explore, and learn about the natural world by experiencing it first hand

    We ( Kindergarten team) would like for you to use the afternoon and evening to encourage these activities and participate in them with your child.
