Supporting Neurodiverse Students: Bullying Prevention & Resources (SB 939)

Our district is committed to creating safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments for all students. As part of California’s focus on educational equity, we are sharing important resources to support neurodiverse students and help prevent and respond to bullying.

Beginning in the 2025–26 school year, all school districts are required to provide families with access to resources developed by the University of California and California State University Collaborative for Neurodiversity and Learning. These materials are designed to support students with diverse learning needs and ensure every child feels seen, respected, and protected at school.

What is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity recognizes that all students learn and experience the world in different ways. This includes students with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning differences. Embracing neurodiversity means valuing these differences and creating environments where every student can thrive.

Families, students, and educators can use these resources to:

  • Better understand neurodiverse learners and their unique strengths
  • Recognize and respond to bullying behaviors
  • Access tools and strategies to support student well-being
  • Promote inclusive and respectful school communities

At Sunnyvale School District, we follow research-based practices to prevent bullying and promote safe, supportive school environments. Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that bullying prevention is most effective when schools, families, and students work together to build a culture of respect and inclusion.

What We’re Doing at Sunnyvale

Our schools take a proactive approach to bullying prevention by:

  • Teaching social-emotional learning (SEL) skills such as empathy, self-awareness, and responsible decision-making
  • Promoting positive school climates where students feel connected and supported
  • Providing staff training to recognize, prevent, and respond to bullying
  • Encouraging students to speak up and report concerns
  • Responding promptly and consistently to incidents

How Families Can Help

Families play an important role in preventing bullying. The CDC encourages families to:

  • Talk regularly with your child about their school experiences
  • Encourage kindness, respect, and inclusion
  • Help your child understand how to safely respond to bullying
  • Monitor online activity and discuss digital responsibility
  • Report concerns to your school so they can be addressed early
