Congratulations to the Sunnyvale School District’s (SSD) four City of Sunnyvale Community Award-winners!

• Sunnyvale School District Board of Education President Bridget Watson was selected for the Mayor’s Award of Excellence.
• Elsa Nuñez, a Columbia Middle School parent, won a Community Award for Contribution to the Arts, for her work with Folklórica dance at Columbia Middle School.
• Christine Penland, an art teacher at Columbia Middle School, was selected for the Community Award for Educator of the Year.
• Eric Krock, a Cherry Chase Elementary parent, was selected for Environmental Achievement for his work as a Greenspace advocate. 

The City accepts award nominations from the community year-round. A panel of former Community Award recipients and current board and commission members selects the winners.

“Sunnyvale is fortunate to have many people who invest their time and energy making a difference in our community,” said Sunnyvale Mayor Larry Klein. “Our award winners are truly inspiring, and we’re delighted to celebrate and recognize them for their many unique contributions.”

“We are delighted that the City of Sunnyvale is recognizing members of the SSD community for their dedication and efforts to advance student success,” said Superintendent Gudiel R. Crosthwaite, Ph.D. “Our close partnership with the City bolsters our work supporting student learning and achievement and strengthens the entire community.”

The mayor and city council will present the awards at the annual State of the City event from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on September 20 at City Hall, 456 W. Olive Ave., Sunnyvale. In addition to the Community Awards presentations, the free event includes the mayor’s State of the City address, recognition of Board and Commission members, a reception, and a community organization fair.
