SSD students gather on the carpet in their classroom

At its September 18, 2025, meeting, the Sunnyvale School District (SSD) Board of Education approved Resolution #R26-09: In Support of Proposition 50 – Protecting Public Education and California’s Representation in Congress.

Proposition 50, a statewide ballot measure, seeks to safeguard California’s fair representation in Congress and defend public education from federal threats, including budget cuts and policy rollbacks.

“California students deserve stability, opportunity, and support,” said Superintendent Dr. Gudiel R. Crosthwaite. “Proposition 50 is about ensuring that our state continues to have the resources and representation it needs to serve every child, particularly our most vulnerable.”

The resolution cites recent federal actions—including efforts to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education, rescind protections against immigration enforcement at schools and other sensitive locations, and weaken programs like Medi-Cal and CalFresh—that directly threaten the well-being of students and families. Freezing or cutting federal education funding also destabilizes local budgets, threatens student health and well-being, and creates barriers to student success.

Dr. Crosthwaite added, “When federal policies undermine the essential services our schools rely on, it’s our responsibility to stand up for students and families. Supporting Proposition 50 is about protecting their future and ensuring Sunnyvale continues to provide safe, joyful, and rigorous learning for every child.”

By supporting Proposition 50, the District affirms its commitment to:

  • Defend equitable access to high-quality education for all students, especially students in Special Education, English Language Learners, and socio-economically disadvantaged students.
  • Protect vital programs that support teacher recruitment, student mental health and wellness, and enrichment.
  • Advocate for California’s strong voice in Congress to secure resources for public schools.

Board President Bridget Watson stated, “Our students need safe and stable learning environments, as well as basic needs like nutritious meals and accessible healthcare, to thrive. Recent federal actions have undermined this critical foundation. Proposition 50 is essential to safeguard fair congressional representation and defend California’s ability to advocate for its public schools.”
