Ellis families come together for family reading nights
Ellis had its second Family Reading Night “Superhero Reader Night” on May 10 and it was a huge success! The school had about 175 people in attendance.
Ellis’ vision this school year was to foster a love of reading in all students and to encourage every child to build a positive reading life. All teachers have successfully implemented the Lucy Calkins Reader’s Workshop curriculum and have seen the positive impact it is making in their students’ lives.
One teacher states, “My students have been thinking so deeply about their reading. The conversations during class discussions are at a deeper level and students are able to articulate their thoughts to one another. I love how engaged my students are during read alouds and Reader’s Workshop time.”
To support this initiative, Ellis has hosted two family reading nights this year. At the latest family reading night, families celebrated the students’ reading superpowers by participating in reading games, picking out a free book to take home, listening to teachers read aloud their favorite stories, writing superhero stories and munching on popcorn! A librarian from Sunnyvale Public Library also came to hand out library cards to students. It was an awesome night for Ellis families!
