Fairwood girl scouts propose installing bottle filling stations to school, district leadership
The Fairwood Explorer fifth-grade Girl Scout Juniors presented to Principal Rachelle Romander and Rob Smiley, Chief Operations Officer, on November 30th, 2018. The Girl Scout Juniors are working on their Bronze Award, the highest award given at the Junior level. This award asks a team of Junior Girl Scouts to identify a project that would benefit their community. The girls proposed a project in which they would install water bottle refilling stations at Fairwood Explorer. Through research, the girls had identified a variety of reasons why a refilling station would benefit the community, including cleaner water dispensers and less waste from disposable water bottles. To pay for the project, the Girl Scouts plan to use money from their cookie sales, and they have applied for a grant through the water district. After a tour of the locations the girls proposed for the water bottle filling stations, the girls were provided with next steps for their project. They will be researching models and providing the operations department with their top selections to ensure a good fit is found in the school. If all goes well, the Girl Scouts hope to be able to install their new Water Bottle Filling Stations by April, in honor of Earth Day.
