August 28, 2019
School years are all about new beginnings, and this is one of my favorite times of the year. This is my 47th brand new school year. I am so blessed to have been able to serve in four different school districts in two states, Nebraska and California, and I am especially grateful to have spent the last 33 years of service in such a remarkable school district and community as Sunnyvale.
Over the years I have gathered together an amazing team of educators, and I have full confidence that the quality work of our learning community will continue to get better and better each year in the service to our students. I absolutely believe the future of Sunnyvale School District is ever so bright!
So, with that, and I admit it is bittersweet, I am announcing a new beginning of my own, which will actually start at the end of this school year with my retirement.
It has been incredible to see teachers and staff in action, connecting and supporting students over the years. It has been inspiring to see students grow in mind and heart. And during my time here, I have seen many of our former students return years later as parents with students of their own.
It has been a privilege forging relationships with our community and with this district family, witnessing our staff using their skills and assets to carry out this noble work on behalf of our students. It has been an honor and joy to serve this district, students, and families, for all of these many years.
I am announcing my plans now so that the school board can find an appropriate successor before the 2020-2021 school year. Having a new superintendent in place, I am hoping by July 1, will help promote a smooth transition. Information will be forthcoming regarding opportunities for community involvement in the selection process. I will certainly be available to support the new superintendent in any way I can, serving as a resource as the torch is passed.
I wish you all a wonderful year ahead, and I will see you all around the schoolhouse.
With warm wishes,
Benjamin H. Picard, ED.D
Superintendent of Schools.
