Farewell Message from Dr. Picard
Dear SSD Family,
I never imagined I would be transitioning to retirement at a time when our campuses are devoid of students, but I will settle for quiet hallways and empty playgrounds if it helps to keep our children safe. So for now, our brick-and-mortar schools have given way to virtual classrooms, while students complete schoolwork from home.
Immediately upon hearing the news that we would be closing campuses, our team leaped into action to create a user-friendly, interactive distance learning program. I am so pleased with the results. Our virtual schoolhouse shows real consideration for the challenges families are facing and deep caring for the children we serve. It reflects a commitment to our district’s values, and I couldn’t be more proud.
Well acquainted with these values is our district’s own Dr. Michael Gallagher, who will begin as our district’s new superintendent on July 1, when I commence my retirement. Dr. Gallagher has helped shape the culture of our learning community over the past 10 years. I have every confidence that under his leadership, our district will remain values-driven, and our children will be well served — whether they are working from their homes or filling our halls with their bright energy once again.
On a personal note, I would like to thank each member of our learning community: parents/guardians, teachers, classified staff, and district partners. It has been a genuine pleasure to work alongside you in serving our children. I am grateful to you. I am also grateful for the children themselves, for infusing my work with joy every day.
Thank you for your many years of support,
Benjamin H. Picard, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
