Welcome

  • San Miguel School is a great place to learn and grow.  Our students have a well-rounded experience that includes Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies but also extends into drama, dance, music, and visual arts.  Our students are also working on becoming 21st-century learners.  With our common core standards adoption, we are also working on deepening student understanding and knowledge past rote memorization.

San Miguel is also home to Juntos, Sunnyvale's Dual Immersion Spanish/English Program, which launched in 2015.  San Miguel was also named an Ashoka Changemaker School in the spring of 2014.  It's an exciting time to be in San Miguel!

San Miguel comprises a community of administrators, teachers, parents, and students willing to work, change and grow as we work together to provide each child with a quality education. We truly believe that it takes a collaborative effort to enable all students to meet the social, multicultural, and technological challenges of the twenty-first century. As a result of our collaboration, San Miguel is committed to the beliefs that:

    • high expectations yield high results
    • a safe and nurturing environment supports learning
    • education is the right of every child and the responsibility of the entire community

Juntos Spanish-English Dual Immersion Program

  • In Juntos, a Dual Immersion Spanish-English Program your child will benefit from all the things that make Sunnyvale School District special — high academic standards, academic rigor, rich curriculum, and caring instruction. In addition, dual-immersion students:

    - Develop outstanding analytical skills that strengthen learning overall

    - Become fully literate in both English and Spanish during their primary school years, giving them an advantage in high school, college, and beyond

In Juntos, Spanish for "together", students will learn Spanish and English at the same time, achieving bilingualism and biliteracy. Regardless of what language you speak at home, this program will develop your child’s ability to speak and read academic Spanish and English, as well as strengthening all academic areas.

Juntos is offered exclusively to Sunnyvale School District’s students. It is open to all district kindergartners and first graders but space is limited and students will be selected on a first come, first served basis.

No previous language skills are required. For more information on San Miguel Elementary’s Juntos Spanish-English Dual Immersion program, please call (408) 522-8278.

Ashoka Changemaker School

  • tree San Miguel Elementary joined the Ashoka Changemaker Schools Network in 2014. Ashoka is a national community of elementary schools that aim to serve as models for cultivating skills such as teamwork, empathy, leadership and problem-solving. It serves as a platform where teachers can share their best practices when it comes to building these skills through webcasts and blogs, or even via live video chats.

Being a part of the network means San Miguel has access to the best practices of other leading schools in the country and the world, as Ashoka has built a network of more than 3,000 entrepreneurs across the globe.

According to Ashoka, a child who masters empathy at the age of 6 is less likely to bully 10 years later, and for students who have had one supportive relationship with an adult outside the family can be the difference between success and failure as an adult. Empathy is increasingly critical to success at home, in the workplace, and in the world.
