• Co-Curricular Activities / Student Eligibility

All students participating in co-curricular activities, including after-school sports, plays, clubs, etc., will have to meet academic and behavior expectations. Student-athletes may be required to submit a daily academic/behavior eligibility card with feedback from each teacher to determine if they are eligible to participate in that day’s practice or game. Students who are absent the day of a game, practice, or after-school activity, may not participate in that activity that day.

    Dances

    • Only Columbia Middle School students may attend
    • Teachers and parent volunteers supervise the dance. Once inside the dance, students must remain inside until the end of the dance.
    • The CMS Dress Code applies along with all school rules. Students who are inappropriately dressed will not be admitted to the event.
    • Students absent from school on the day of a dance/sport/play will not be allowed to attend a dance on the same day.
    • Students who skip assigned detentions the week a dance is held may not attend the dance.
    • Appropriate dancing is expected at all times, or students will be asked to leave the dance.

    Field Trips

It is our goal to have all students participate in all team field trips.

In order to facilitate coordination and planning and to avoid any misunderstandings, students who do not return permission slips and money by the due date will not be able to participate in the trip. Deadlines for permission slips and money will be the same day. Requests for scholarships or extenuating circumstances need to be made prior to the deadline in writing to the teacher leading the trip. No child will be excluded due to inability to pay.

Students are expected to be safe, respectful and responsible on all field trips. Students may lose the privilege of attending a field trip for the following reasons:

    • Inappropriate behavior on prior field trip

    • Inappropriate campus/classroom behavior

    • Teachers who are leading field trips will have the ultimate authority to decide who can participate in any given field trip.

    • If driver/chaperones are unable to drive at the last minute, they will be asked to arrange for an alternate driver.

End of the Year Field Trip Policies

In order for a student to participate in their end-of-year grade level field trip, they must meet the following criteria:

    • Has no more than five days of suspension during the academic year and no suspensions during 3rd trimester (both single class and full day suspension)

    • Has no more than 18 total absences for the entire academic year (only absences accompanied by a doctor’s note will not be included in this total). Family vacations and parent excused absences will count towards the 18 allowed absences.

    • Students with excessive tardies may be removed from end-of-year field trips and activities.

    Note

    • Field trip payments are non-refundable. If a student has paid but is then disqualified due to not meeting the above criteria, he/she will not receive a refund.

    • Students who are not eligible for the end of the year field trip, but who attend anyway, even if accompanied by a parent or guardian, will not be allowed to attend the promotion party.
