Home-School Connection

  • Positive Discipline emphasizes the importance of student engagement in the discipline process to help them become more fluent and confident in solving their problems. Students learn and practice a common language that you will hear on campus from kindergarten to fifth grade. At a basic level, conversations often begin.
Student 1: “Are you ready to hear my [or, if facilitated, __’s] feelings?”
    Student 2: “Yes.”
    Student 1: “I felt ___ when you ____.”
    Student 2: “I understand that you felt __ when I ___.”

After both children share their feelings, problem-solving can begin. We also provide students with strategies to interact with one another and solve problems before they hurt someone else’s feelings, as well as what to do when they feel troubled. As children internalize these strategies, you may hear them using them at home with siblings or friends.
