Writing Instruction in Kindergarten

Kinder Writing
  • Nurturing the kindergarten writer is a delicate skill. The Writer's Workshop model teaches our young writers that they are authors and have stories to share. We support our students as they choose topics and carry their writing through the writing process toward publication. To ensure that each writer flourishes, we deliberately and thoughtfully teach them the skills, strategies, and craft they need to grow.

What does Writer's Workshop look like in the kindergarten classroom?

Mini-Lesson: 5-10 minutes where the teacher teaches one new writing strategy, models the strategy and students practice
Independent Writing: 20-40 minutes where students work independently on writing
Conferencing: during independent writing teacher checks in with students to direct and instruct students one-on-one or in small groups
Share/Wrap-Up: 5-10 minutes when students get to share with each other
